Statistics indicate women filing for divorce is more common

In a California divorce, many issues will come to the forefront, such as spousal support, child support, property division and more. People may forget about one of the key factors in a case: what led to the end of a marriage in the first place. Understanding who initiates divorce and why can be key in a case.

A study by the American Sociological Association shows that women pursue divorce in 70% of cases. This happens alongside the fact that women have a greater desire to get married in the first place. Although, this can appear counter-intuitive, certain factors are important in grasping why women begin divorce proceedings more frequently.

Women might think the marriage is preventing them from achieving their goals in life. The number of women in the workforce is above 50%. Even if both spouses work, a study by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that 49% of women do daily housework. For men, it is 20%. Women dealing with these and other pressures in the marriage may want to get divorced and move on to alleviate some challenges.

A lack of communication can lead to gaps in emotional connections. Men generally rely on their wives for emotional support, but women can get that same support from friends. Finally, women are less tolerant of men behaving badly than they were in the past. Since men were once the main breadwinners, women may have been compelled to turn a blind eye to mistreatment or infidelity. When they are earning their own income, women are more willing to end the marriage.

Regardless of who initiates the divorce and why, it may be useful to have legal advice from the start. A law firm experienced in all areas of divorce might be able to help.
