Stevie J going to court for $1 million child support debt

| May 26, 2016 | Child Support |

California residents who are fans of musician Stevie J may have read that the “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” star will be going to trial for a child support issue. He reportedly owes back child support totaling $1.1 million for his 18-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter.

The original child support order called for Stevie J to pay around $8,557 per month for each of his children. Though he now owes more than $1 million in back payments, Stevie J claims that he has taken care of his children and provided them with everything they need. Stevie J still has a relationship with his children, and he recently attended the Bad Boy Reunion concert with his children and their mother.

According to reports, Stevie J was hoping to settle his child support case outside of court. He filed a request for deferred prosecution, but the request was rejected, and his trial was scheduled for Dec. 5. With deferred prosecution, Stevie J would have been able to sign an agreement with the government and avoid going to court. Stevie J has said that he understands the prosecutors are doing their job, but he believes the case is without merit.

When two divorced parents have an amiable relationship, the higher-earning parent might decide to make child support payments personally. A lawyer may advise a divorced parent against this, because there will be no record of personal child support payments. As years go by, a divorced parent could end up accruing a sizable debt for unpaid child support even if they were making the payments personally.
